Despite hearing concerns and cautions from trusted healthcare providers in my community (my doula, and the lactation consultant at Wesley labor and delivery) about Dr. Scharenberg’s poor bedside manner, I went ahead with treatment anyway, hoping it would help my newborn. At our first visit, he told me, “I have no negative reviews online, go look, you won’t find one” yet shared that some mothers “walk out in the middle of treatments with their babies and never come back.” The first thing he promised us is that our newborn would be better in only a few days because we started treatment so early in her life. We completed 7 treatments with him and saw no improvement. He told us that all of his patients see resolution of colic with 10 treatments. On day one, as a breastfeeding mom, I was advised to follow a diet removing beef, pork, eggs, beans, rice, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, onion, lettuce and leafy greens, nuts, bananas, coffee, soda, and more. When reviewing my food intake form, he said, “Well, it looks like you’ve eaten the entire kitchen sink.” As a postpartum mother who had just experienced significant blood loss during birth, I personally found it concerning to remove so many iron-rich foods from my diet. When discussing colic, he told me that latch issues, poor breastfeeding mechanics, and swallowing air “have nothing to do with colic.” In my baby’s case, her severe tongue tie was causing significant air intake, nursing difficulties, reflux, and pain. We worked with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in infant feeding, an IBCLC, and had her tongue tie revised. That combination fully resolved her colic symptoms. Every treatment, he covered his hand with a blanket while working on my baby. If you look at other picture reviews online you will see this. I’m not implying anything inappropriate, but I personally prefer to see exactly what’s being done during care, especially when the work is near the diaper area. He told me that if other providers say that other forms of bodywork could be helpful for your baby that they are wrong. On our first day of treatment he told us all colicky babies are overfed, then on day 3 told me that ALL my baby’s cries were “hunger cries” even if I had just nursed her for 20 minutes and she refused to feed anymore. He then told me “Prove me wrong!” I was also told we couldn’t stop in the middle of treatments, even if my baby cried for extended periods during it, because treatment would then be “ineffective.” When my baby finally fell asleep from exhaustion during that first appointment, he claimed his treatment had worked, tipped her upside down on the mat, and covered her entire face with his hand and rubbed it back and forth to demonstrate how deeply she was sleeping. I asked him not to do this, as I didn’t feel it was necessary and wanted to minimize germs to my newborn, especially after he had been seeing other patients all day. At the next appointment, he did the same thing again, and I had to repeat my request. As a pediatric nurse and mother, I believe providers should avoid touching a newborn’s face unless medically necessary. The blankets used in the office had a strong fragrance that lingered on my baby’s skin and clothes — this may not bother everyone, but it wasn’t my preference. While I’m happy for families who have had success here, I personally did not find this approach effective for my baby. In our case, a one-size-fits-all method and the belief that a “weak iliocecal valve” is the sole cause of colic did not fit our situation. My hope is that sharing my experience helps other parents make informed decisions, especially given the cost ($750 for 10 treatments) and the non-refundable payment policy. Another mother told me she feels like he prays on desperate families looking for a magic miracle fix and this rang true for us.

My husband & I just took our son to his first appt for a colic consult today. The outcome of this first visit was shocking! We went in with a baby that cries/screams so much to leaving with a baby that smiled. We of course were skeptical, but trust us & these other reviews that you see that this works!!! Doctor was very patient & VERY educational. He explained everything he was doing as changes were happening. Very spot on with his diagnosis & treatment. We were so happy to see our baby happy & smiling!! We will definitely be back to finish treatment!! If anyone suspects their baby/kiddo possibly being colic, Dr Scharenberg will be my very first recommendation!!

We started seeing Dr. Scharenberg at 5.5 weeks old. My baby had all of the symptoms of colic and would rarely sleep for longer than 30 minute stretches, even with being held and he just cried out in pain most of the time. From the moment we walked in, Dr. Scharenberg promised me he would do whatever it took to fix my baby, and he did! He took as long as he needed and went through all the necessary steps to fix our boy. He is truly a miracle worker. You learn so much about your baby and just the human body in general while chatting with him. After just our first session, we had a completely different baby. After finishing our sessions, he is so much more relaxed and acts as a normal baby now!
